    The 14 LR Question Types You Need to Know

    Family 1 — Drawing From the Stimulus (No New Information)

    These questions ask you to find an answer that is proven by the stimulus itself. You are not adding anything to the argument — you are drawing from it.

    • Must Be True (MBT) — Find the answer that is proven, not just suggested, by the stimulus. Use the Fact Test: if you can't point to the exact part of the stimulus that proves the answer, eliminate it.
    • Main Point — Identify the author's primary conclusion. The most common trap: a true statement that is actually a premise, not the conclusion.
    • Cannot Be True — Find the answer that is logically impossible given the stimulus.

    Family 2 — Analyzing the Argument Structure

    These questions require you to understand how the argument is built before you can answer correctly.

    • Point at Issue — Two speakers disagree. Find what they actually disagree about. An answer is only correct if one speaker would agree and the other would disagree — not just one of them.
    • Method of Reasoning — Describe how the argument is structured. The correct answer is abstract and matches the argument's logical form, not its content.
    • Assumption — Find the unstated premise the argument silently depends on. This is the single most transferable skill on the LSAT.

    Family 3 — Modifying the Argument (Adding New Information)

    These questions ask you to bring in external information to strengthen, weaken, or complete the argument.

    • Strengthen — Find the answer that makes the conclusion more likely to be true.
    • Weaken — Find the answer that most undermines the argument's conclusion.
    • Flaw in the Reasoning — Identify the specific logical error the argument commits.
    • Evaluate the Argument — Find the question whose answer would most affect the argument's strength.
    • Parallel Reasoning — Find the argument with the same logical structure.
    • Parallel Flaw — Find the argument with the same logical error.
    • Justify the Conclusion — Find the answer that, combined with the premises, makes the conclusion 100% certain.
    • Principle Questions — Apply a general rule to a specific situation, or identify the principle that underlies an argument.

    The Core Skill That Unlocks Every Question Type: Identifying the Argument

    Before you can answer any LR question correctly, you need to identify two things in the stimulus:

    1. The conclusion — what the author is trying to convince you of
    2. The premises — the evidence used to support it

    Every LR question type — without exception — requires this first step. The difference between question types is what you do after you've mapped the argument.

    How to find the conclusion: Look for indicator words. Conclusion indicators include: therefore, thus, hence, so, consequently, clearly, this shows that, it follows that. If you see these, the conclusion follows. Premise indicators include: because, since, for, given that, as shown by.

    The hardest case: Sometimes there are no indicator words. In that case, apply the Therefore Test: arrange the sentences and ask which one logically follows from the others. The conclusion is the statement that the others support.


    The 4 Most Common Question Types — And How to Attack Each One

    1. Assumption Questions

    An assumption is an unstated premise — a claim the argument relies on without saying so. The gap between what the premises establish and what the conclusion claims is exactly where the assumption lives.

    The two types:

    • Supporter Assumption — bridges the logical gap between premises and conclusion
    • Defender Assumption — protects the argument against a potential attack

    The Negation Technique: When you can't decide between two answer choices, negate each one. The correct assumption, when negated, destroys or severely damages the argument's conclusion. Wrong answers, when negated, have little or no effect on the argument.

    Critical precision point: The logical negation of a statement is its minimal denial — the weakest claim that makes the original false. "All X are Y" negates to "Not all X are Y" — not "No X are Y." Using an overly extreme negation causes you to eliminate the correct answer.

    Example from practice: An argument concludes that open-plan offices improve employee morale because employees in open-plan offices report higher social connectedness. The gap: nowhere does the argument state that social connectedness contributes to morale. That unstated link is the assumption. Negate it — "social connectedness does NOT contribute to employee morale" — and the argument immediately collapses.

    2. Weaken Questions

    Weaken questions ask you to find the answer that most undermines the argument's conclusion. The correct answer doesn't need to destroy the conclusion — it needs to make it less likely.

    The 5 Weaken strategies based on argument type:

    The numbers vs. percentages trap: An argument states that Drug A caused adverse effects in 120 patients while Drug B caused adverse effects in 340 patients, concluding Drug A is safer. The correct Weaken answer: Drug A was taken by only 800 patients (15% adverse rate) while Drug B was taken by 12,000 patients (2.8% adverse rate). Drug A is actually less safe when you look at the rate — not the raw number.

    3. Strengthen Questions

    Strengthen questions ask you to make the conclusion more probable — not certain. The correct answer operates on the gap between premises and conclusion.

    Five core strategies for strengthening causal arguments:

    • Eliminate an alternative cause
    • Show the cause produces the effect in a controlled setting
    • Show that without the cause, the effect doesn't appear
    • Eliminate reversed causation
    • Validate the data quality or methodology

    4. Flaw in the Reasoning Questions

    Flaw questions ask you to name the specific logical error the argument commits. The correct answer is abstract — it describes the structure of the error, not the content.

    The most common flaws tested:

    • Correlation treated as causation — two things occur together, but the argument concludes one causes the other
    • Unrepresentative sample — a small or biased sample is used to draw conclusions about a larger population
    • False analogy — two situations are treated as equivalent when they have relevant differences
    • Confusing necessary and sufficient conditions — "All A are B" does not mean "All B are A"
    • Quantifier errors — confusing "some," "most," and "all"

    Your 30-Day Self-Study Plan

    This plan assumes approximately 1–1.5 hours of focused study per day. It is designed for students starting from a baseline score in the 145–155 range who want to reach 160+.

    Week 1 — Foundation (Days 1–7)

    Goal: Master the argument structure and the must-know question types

    • Days 1–2: Learn to identify conclusions, premises, and argument structure. Practice on 15–20 stimuli daily without answering the questions yet — just map the argument.

    • Days 8–9: Assumption questions. Practice the Negation Technique on every question until it becomes automatic.
    • Days 10–11: Strengthen questions. For each question, identify the argument type first (causal, analogy, survey, prediction, statistical), then select the strategy.
    • Days 12–13: Weaken questions. Focus especially on the 5 weaken strategies by argument type.

    Week 3 — Advanced Question Types (Days 15–21)

    • Days 15–16: Flaw in the Reasoning. Memorize the 8 most common flaw types. Practice naming the flaw before looking at answer choices.
    • Days 17–18: Parallel Reasoning and Parallel Flaw. Focus on matching logical structure, not content. A correct Parallel answer will have the same argument form even if the topic is completely different.
    • Days 19–20: Conditional reasoning. Master the contrapositive and understand how conditional chains produce valid inferences.
    • Day 21: Timed section simulation — 26 questions in 35 minutes. Full review.

    Week 4 — Integration and Test-Day Preparation (Days 22–30)

    Goal: Build speed, accuracy, and mental endurance

    • Days 22–24: Mixed practice across all 14 question types. Identify your 2–3 weakest types and target them specifically.
    • Days 25–27: Full timed LR sections. After each section, complete a full error analysis: for every wrong answer, identify (1) the question type, (2) the step where you went wrong, and (3) the correct strategy.
    • Days 28–29: Error pattern review. Return to the theory for your most frequent error types. Re-do worked examples from those chapters.
    • Day 30: Light review only. Review your error patterns. Read through your key strategy notes. No new practice tests.

    The 160+ Execution Habits

    Knowing the strategies is not enough. You need to apply them consistently under timed pressure. Here are the habits that separate 160+ scorers:

    Pre-phrase before you look at the answer choices. For every question, state your expected answer in your own words before reading the options. This is your protection against attractive wrong answers. On 80%+ of LR questions, a pre-phrased answer closely matches the correct choice.

    Eliminate with a named reason. For every answer you cross out, name the specific problem: "outside scope," "too strong," "wrong direction," "new information," "premises don't support this." Unnamed eliminations are guesses dressed as reasoning.

    Skip threshold: 90 seconds — hard limit. If you've spent 90 seconds on a question and can't decide, make your best guess, mark it, and move on. Return if time allows. Spending 3 minutes on one hard question and rushing through three easier ones is a losing strategy.

    Accuracy before speed. When you're practicing, don't submit your answer until you're fully confident it's correct. Speed comes from pattern recognition — and pattern recognition comes from deliberate, careful practice. Students who rush through practice questions to "do more reps" are reinforcing bad habits, not building good ones.


    The Most Common Mistakes LR Students Make

    Mistake 1: Treating "could be true" as "must be true." On MBT questions, an answer that is consistent with the stimulus but not proven by it is wrong. Many students select answers that are plausible — not answers that are proven. Apply the Fact Test to every MBT answer.

    Mistake 2: Using extreme negations. When applying the Negation Technique on Assumption questions, students often negate "all" to "none" instead of "not all." This causes them to eliminate correct answers because the negated version seems too weak to destroy the argument.

    Mistake 3: Attacking the wrong thing on Weaken questions. A Weaken answer attacks the conclusion — not the premises, not the methodology in general, not the topic. Always ask: does this make the conclusion less likely to be true?

    Mistake 4: Matching content instead of structure on Parallel questions. Parallel Reasoning questions ask for the same logical structure, not the same topic. An argument about medicine and an argument about sports can have identical logical structures.

    Mistake 5: Over-focusing on speed early in prep. Speed is the result of pattern recognition. It is not a skill you develop by rushing. Students who try to go fast before they understand the patterns will plateau at the same score for weeks.


    How to Use Your Error Analysis to Improve

    The most important practice habit is not how many questions you do — it's what you do after each question you miss.

    For every wrong answer, complete this four-step review:

    1. Name the question type. What specific type of LR question was this?
    2. Identify where you went wrong. Was it the argument identification step? The strategy selection? A specific wrong answer trap?
    3. Identify the correct reasoning. Don't just accept the answer key — understand why the correct answer is correct and why each wrong answer is wrong.
    4. Log it. Keep a running record of the question types you miss most. Three or more misses in the same type signals a priority review area. Return to the theory for that chapter before you do more practice.

    Pattern recognition — not content knowledge — is what moves the LSAT score.


    What to Do 48 Hours Before Test Day

    The 48 hours before the LSAT are not for learning new material. They are for consolidating what you've already built.

    • Stop new content. No new practice tests, no new theory sections. You are consolidating, not learning.
    • Review your error patterns. Look at the question types you've been missing most frequently. Read the correct answer explanations for 2–3 of those questions. Lock in the pattern.
    • Sleep is your most important preparation tool. The night two nights before the test matters more than the night immediately before. Prioritize sleep starting now.
    • Morning warm-up. Before leaving for the test, read 2–3 LR stimuli. Don't score yourself — just identify the conclusion and structure. You're warming up pattern recognition, not testing knowledge.
